UK publishes post-Brexit EU deal negotiating documents

first_imgThese documents had previously only been shared by the U.K. negotiators with their EU counterparts on Michel Barnier’s team — with even EU member country officials not getting a glimpse. The draft legal texts were accompanied by a punchy letter from the U.K. chief negotiator David Frost to his EU counterpart Michel Barnier, in which he counters the arguments the EU has made for its demands in the negotiations.“At this moment in negotiations, what is on offer is not a fair free trade relationship between close economic partners, but a relatively low-quality trade agreement coming with unprecedented EU oversight of our laws and institutions,” Frost writes. However, he ends with a positive note, hoping “that in the weeks to come the EU will think again about its proposals in a way that will enable us to then find a rapid and constructive alternative way forward.”In the House of Commons, Cabinet Office Minister Gove said there had been some progress in negotiations, but added: “There remain however some areas where we have significant differences of principle.”He argued: “The EU essentially wants us to obey the rules of their club even though we are no longer members and they want the same access to our fishing grounds as they currently enjoy, while restricting our access to their market. It remains difficult to reach a mutually beneficial agreement while the EU maintains such an ideological approach.”Britain has said it will not be legally bound by EU rules, while insisting it will maintain or improve standards anyway. LONDON — The British government Tuesday published the draft documents setting out its approach to negotiations on a future relationship with the EU as Michael Gove blasted Brussels over its “ideological approach” to the Brexit talks. The government published texts online on a draft free-trade agreement, a draft fisheries plan, a draft air transport arrangement, draft social security coordination plan, draft civil aviation safety agreement, draft energy deal, draft civil nuclear cooperation plan, draft law enforcement and judicial cooperation proposal, and a proposal on how to deal with unaccompanied asylum-seeking children, and the “readmission of those residing without authorization.”A Downing Street spokesman told journalists: “We are publishing them as a constructive contribution to the negotiations so they are available to all.” A document setting out how the border between Ireland and Northern Ireland will function will be published shortly, the spokesperson said. The EU has also insisted the U.K. remain tied to its rules on labor, environmental and other standards to avoid Britain becoming a major competitor on its shores with light-touch regulation. But Britain has said it will not be legally bound by EU rules, while insisting it will maintain or improve standards anyway, and is demanding control over its fishing zones. The next round of Brexit negotiations will be held the week of June 1.This article has been updated. Massachusetts Towns Move Forward with Regional Paramedic Service

first_imgBedford, Mass. – Since 1982, Emerson Hospital has provided advanced life support (ALS) service to Lincoln and 12 other area communities. But with the hospital phasing out the program in the next year due to financial constraints, several towns are working together to develop a new regional ALS system. Lincoln is one of 10 Emerson ALS member communities moving forward with plans to establish the Central Middlesex Emergency Rescue Authority (CMERA). Three towns Bedford, Wayland and Westford have opted not to participate in CMERA, although Lincoln Fire Chief Arthur Cotoni said those communities could still receive coverage through mutual aid agreements. We may not be able to come up with a solution that works for all communities in the same manner, but we think there s a flexibility to have members and affiliates, Cotoni said.
