Former STM, LSU star has enjoyed lifetime of memories

first_imgThe heavy rain over the last two days canceled Friday night’s scheduled Lyle Mouton bobble head giveaway night for the Acadiana Cane Cutters at Fabacher Field. For the record, it has been rescheduled for Saturday, July 26 when the Cutters are scheduled to play The Woodlands. As inconvenient as bad weather can make special baseball plans, however, don’t feel too badly for Mouton. Sure, it may require another trip back home for the Clearwater, Fla. resident. But in case you’ve lost track with this former St. Thomas More two-sport star, life’s been pretty good to him since he left Lafayette the first time.If you haven’t heard much about him since helping coach Danny Broussard’s Cougars basketball team win the program’s first state title way back in 1986 and then really establishing STM as a national power with the 38-2, state runner-up season of 1987, Mouton signed a basketball scholarship with the Tigers after earning numerous state and national individual honors. While at LSU, he got to play in the backcourt with one of the most electrifying scoring guards the sport’s ever seen in Chris Jackson. Once he decided to give up basketball for a baseball career after two seasons at LSU, his consolation prize was playing pick-up games with this new hot-shot freshman on campus named Shaquille O’Neal. While he tried to play catch-up on his baseball skills during the summer, Mouton got the opportunity to play alongside a famous basketball star named Michael Jordan, himself also trying to relearn some of baseball’s nuances. As for his spring baseball career at LSU, he helped the Tigers reach the College World Series as a DH in his first season of focusing on baseball and then primarily played right field in LSU’s first national title season in 1991.And in case you’ve lost track of Mouton since leaving LSU, he was drafted in the fifth round by the New York Yankees, beginning an 11-year professional baseball career.Sure, he wishes that career would have included longer stretches as a starter in the Major Leagues. As it was, Mouton accumulated 805 career MLB at-bats between 1995-2001 with the White Sox, Orioles, Brewers and Marlins with a .280 average, 22 homers and 116 RBIs.But along the way, he experienced some stories to tell for a lifetime. Once he got to Triple-A with the Yankees, his roommate was this soft-spoken guy named Derek Jeter. And for the record, Mouton will tell you that Jeter is everything he appears to be on and off the field.“What you see is what you get,” Mouton said Friday.Upon making his Major League debut with the White Sox, he got to play with the likes of Hall of Fame Frank Thomas and made a long-lasting friendship with teammate Dave Martinez, who is currently the Rays bench coach and godfather to one of Mouton’s three children.Once his career brought him to Baltimore for a short stint, Mouton found himself sitting on the bench right next to Cal Ripken on the evening of Sept. 20, 1998 – the day that baseball’s new Iron Horse ended his consecutive games played streak at 2,632.Mouton tells the story that he noticed Ripken’s usual routine being a little different on that night and quickly alerted an unsuspecting Ryan Minor – also a former college basketball player himself at Oklahoma – that he’d better get ready to play that night before the manager ever altered possibly the most infamous lineup card ever on the dugout wall.During his time with the Brewers, he got to work with one of the game’s all-time greatest hitters in Rod Carew. His career also offered him the experience of playing a season in Japan, which wouldn’t have been preferable but again, offering stories for a lifetime. In case you lost track of Mouton since he finished out his pro career with the Marlins in 2001, he’s done pretty well in that phase of his life as well. He and former LSU gymnast Aimee Churchill have been married for two decades now and have two daughters, Alexis and Kayla, in college and a son, Cameron, in high school. The only catch is that both girls have already signed to play soccer at none other than Alabama.Mouton jokes it’s pretty much a divided family when it comes to SEC athletic verbal wars, but maintains that he went to a different school that both of his parents and never considered not allowing his children to blaze their own trails.Cameron, by the way, plays baseball and is also currently the starting JV quarterback at his high school in Clearwater. And now just a few years away from having all of his children out of the house and with insurance business interests closer to home these days, Mouton may be running into more of his old high school buddies in the near future after traveling the world since his STM days. With more stories than most of us could ever dream of.last_img read more

The title of the article is misleading.  It should say something like “helmet and third-jersey logo” or “third jersey / helmet logo”.  I thought I was going to see a jersey.
