The national team dominated the men’s ice hockey event of the 29th Southeast Asian Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It claimed the inaugural gold following a 5-4 victory over top-seed Thailand in a tightly-contested championship game late Thursday night at the Empire City Mall.The Philippines started strong. Francios Gautler converted a missed shot by Benjamin Imperial. Paul Gabriel Sanchez then scored back-to-back hits to widen the lead to 3-0.After tallying its fourth point of the game, Thailand suddenly went on a huge run to come to within 4-3, but Philippines quickly answered back to restore a two-point advantage in the final period.The victory also completed Philippines’ perfect slate in the men’s ice hockey event with victories over Indonesia (12-0), Singapore (7-2) and host Malaysia (7-7 tie and 2-1 shootout).Meanwhile, Trenten Anthony Beram became the country’s first double-gold medalist in the biennial sporting event after dominating the men’s 400-meter run at the Bukit Jalil Stadium.In boxing, John Marvin needed just 21 seconds to dispose Malaysian Adli Hafildz B.
