UWF Adds Two More All-America Honors on Final Day of NCAA Championships

first_imgGrace Sommerville finished 17th overall in the 1,650 Free on Saturday morning, coming less than a half-second short of earning honorable mention All-America plaudits.   “I think we were all just focused on having fun and finishing strong,” said senior Burnett. “Me and Sophia are both seniors and we wanted to finish on a high note, so that helped us through. The week was a roller coaster, as it always is. You take the good with the bad and just try to have fun with it.” GREENSBORO, N.C. – Madeline Pitt and the University of West Florida 400 Free Relay team headlined the final day of the NCAA Championships in Greensboro on Saturday. For the fourth time in her career, Pitt finished in the top 16 in the 1,650 Free, becoming the first Argonaut to be a four-time All-American in a single event. West Florida finished the week in 23rd place with 45 points. West Florida ends the meet with a total of six All-America honors. “We were almost at the exact same time last year, and we were able to get into the top eight (in the 400 Free Relay),” Hancock stated. “That’s a great indication of the level of competition at this meet, how hungry these other schools are to improve, and how hard it is to fight for points. They did a great job in the morning. We had people stepping up and really doing some remarkable things.” Pitt now holds the third-most All-America honors in UWF history, with 11, and she has more individual All-America honors than any other swimmer in the program’s history. Madeline Pitt earned her third All-America nod of the week on Saturday evening, with a 17:03.05 in the 1,650 Free. That was good enough to place her 14th in the field, and the senior has now earned All-American status in the mile every year of her UWF career. DAY 4 RESULTS | FULL RESULTS “We had a lot of people who we’re going to have on our team next year who did some very exciting things in the last month, and we’re looking forward to that,” Hancock said. “This is one of the most talented group of seniors we’ve had, and I can’t thank them enough for all they’ve done for the program and congratulate them on their achievements.” This is the fourth consecutive year that UWF has put together an All-American team in the 400 Free Relay. “The week started a little rough, but I just wanted to have fun,” Pitt said about the race. “I think I did that. Everything I did, I was happy with. How could I be disappointed? I really enjoyed it.” Read-Cayton started the day with a 51.03 in the 100 Free, finishing 20th overall and less than a half-second from qualifying for the consolation final. Pia Hulley went 2:03.33 in the 200 Back and took 25th. Morgan Ayers finished her week in Greensboro with a 2:20.94 in the 200 Breast, finishing 30th overall. “A couple results didn’t go Grace’s way in some of the other heats, but she put herself right in there with a chance to score some points for the team,” head coach Andrew Hancock said. “And in the last four years, if you’re penciling in who’s going to score points in the mile, you put Maddie in there. She’s as consistent as they come. So we’re really proud of what those two were able to do.” The 400 Free Relay team of Caitlin Tierney, Taby Read-Cayton, Danica Burnett and Sophia Oliva finished 15th in the event to wrap up Saturday night’s action, after qualifying 16th in the morning session. Caitlin Tierney led the team with a 51.42 100-yard split that was just a tenth of a second behind her opening split from the morning of 51.32 that is the fifth-best 100 Free in school history. #ARGOS#Print Friendly Versionlast_img read more
