WCD villages under water

first_imgResidents of a number of villages on the West Coast of Demerara (WCD) are now calling for assistance after the recent heavy rainfalls have left their villages under water.Heavy rainfall caused major flooding in Zeelugt and Tuschen New Schemes on the West Coast of Demerara (WCD). According to the residents, floodwater has now risen so high that it is entering their homesFollowing calls for assistance, Vice Chairman of Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara) Sheik Ayube visited several communities, including Zeelugt and Tuschen New Scheme on Wednesday to listen to the villagers’ concerns.Speaking with Guyana Times, Ayube said several villages have been under water since Friday last.According to Ayube, during his visit, it was noticed that several yards were flooded and water had gone into several flat houses and bottom flats.As such, he is calling for an intervention on the part of the Communities Ministry to have a “complete network of drainage carried out.”“We need to have their drains excavated and tubes opened up because the water will not run off if this is not done”.The Vice Chairman also highlighted to this publication that these two villages were not handed over to the Neighbouring Democratic Council (NDC) and as such, the villages are not recipients of intervention from the NDC.He is calling for this to be done urgently by the Communities Ministry as “it is predicted that these villagers will suffer greatly if something is not done here”.last_img
